Phokwane Chronicles - written and directed by Moagi Modise
Moagi Modise, South African theatre and film veteran presents his interpretation of the 1896 historical event, the “Phokwane Rebellion”. One in a series of rebellions against British colonisation by the baTlhaping in the 1800’s, Kgosi Galisiwe (pre-colonial spelling of Galeshewe) and 14 other baTlhaping would in 1897 stand trial for the rebellion in Kimberley, charged and later being found guilty of sedition [treason] and murder. Four of those standing trial would be hanged, with the remainder being sentenced to 10 years of imprisonment in the Cape Colony. Life for the baTlhaping nation would never be the same again.
